Helmeted Honeyeater bird

Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability Dr Gillian Sparkes said Zoos Victoria is undertaking leading edge work to tackle the challenge of saving our threatened species.

The Helmeted Honeyeater, the Victorian state emblem, is one critically endangered species. Zoos Victoria is helping save our emblem using a recovery program focused on increasing the number of Helmeted Honeyeaters in the wild by addressing threats in their natural environment, securing habitat protection, running a captive breeding program and releasing bred birds into the wild.  An “insurance population” is also being kept.

You can help Zoos Victoria save the Helmeted Honeyeater, Eastern Barred Bandicoot, Leadbetter’s Possum or other endangered species by joining its Love Your Locals [BROKEN LINK] program.
