State of the Environment

Preparation of the Victorian State of the Environment Report 2018 is underway.

What is this report used for?

The Victorian State of the Environment (SoE) report provides an overview that informs policy and practice in Victoria. The SoE helps government, business and the community take practical action to benefit the environment and improve environmental health. It identifies knowledge gaps, areas for future focus and sets benchmarks against which trends and progress can be measured and actions prioritized.

Why do we report?

The Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability Act 2003 provides for the preparation of a periodical report on the State of the Environment of Victoria, by the Commissioner (section 8a). State of the Environment reporting provides a rigorous, contemporary, scientific evidence base to inform environmental policy and practice in Victoria.

The Office of the Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability collaborates across the government, scientific and NGO sectors to collect, review and synthesize, scientific data on the state of Victoria's natural environment, including reporting on trends over time.

Reports on the state of Victoria's environment are published and tabled in the Victorian parliament by the Commissioner every five years - the most recent report was prepared in 2013.

The Interim State of the Environment Report 2018

The Interim Victorian State of the Environment Report 2018 provides a glimpse into the content of the Victorian State of the Environment Report (SoE) 2018 to be tabled in early 2019. It is intended as a 'progress report' that foreshadows the structure of the final SoE 2018 report, discusses management issues, policy responses by Government and the data and information challenges identified for the SoE 2018 by the Commissioner at the time of publication. The interim report does not include a synthesis of findings or recommendations but does refer to the indicators that will be reported against in the 2018 Victorian State of the Environment, State of the Yarra & its Parklands and State of the Forests reports, to be released in early 2019. The interim report provides a structured, consistent and transparent platform for further consultations by the Office of the Commissioner as the SoE 2018 is finalised.

What is included in the Interim SoE 2018?

The Interim SoE 2018 contains:

  • Background
  • Policy/management and data/information challenges
  • Scope of indicators (inclusions, exclusions, data availability/limitations)
  • Current policy and management responses by State Government

The final SoE 2018 (to be tabled in the Victorian parliament in early 2019) will also contain:

  • Assessments and findings for each indicator
