Today is International Day of the Preservation of the Ozone Layer and marks 32 years since the Montreal Protocol. The Montreal Protocol has led to the phase-out of 99 per cent of ozone-depleting chemicals in refrigerators, air-conditioners and many other products. This week, as part of our 13-week campaign, the Office of the Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability is highlighting the Air chapter of the Victorian State of the Environment 2018 Report (SoE). In Victoria, up to 50% of the population suffer from hay fever or asthma. Currently there are only eight pollen monitoring stations in the state, with readings only done once per day. The Commissioner’s recommendations include investment in a more contemporary pollen monitoring network for Victoria. The report also highlights other air quality monitoring challenges, particularly in regional areas and around major roads and industrial areas. Further research is also required to better understand the health impacts of ultrafine particles and indoor air pollutants.
