September 7 was National Threatened Species Day, raising awareness of plants and animals at risk of extinction. This week, the Office of the Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability is highlighting the Biodiversity chapter of the State of the Environment 2018 Report that includes detailed information on the health of Victoria’s animal and plant life. The State of the Environment 2018 reports on 35 biodiversity indicators including trout cod populations, vertebrate groups (including reptiles) and deer populations. The trend of around three quarters of the biodiversity indicators is either unknown or deteriorating which is why Dr Gillian Sparkes has recommended the creation of the Victorian Chief Biodiversity Scientist role; a leading science practitioner to oversee biodiversity science investment and strategy, at a statewide level, to enable better curation, coordination and tailoring of the Victorian Government's science and research investment.
