The Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability is pleased to share the 2020 Strategic Audit report on the implementation of Environmental Management Systems, which analyses the Victorian Government’s environmental performance in 2019-20.

The 2020 Strategic Audit was tabled in Victorian Parliament on Tuesday 2 March 2021.

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic disrupted traditional ways of working in 2020, with the majority of the Victorian Public Service directed to work from home from March 2020.

During 2019-20, significant improvements were seen in paper use and greenhouse gas emissions for both air and motor vehicle travel. The year also saw an increase in energy use, as VicRoads and Public Transport Victoria merged with the existing Department of Transport.

The Strategic Audit continues to report long-term improvements related to air and motor travel, and consumption of paper, energy and water across staff members. Energy and water use according to office area and green power continue to be areas for improvement in the longer term.

Congratulations to the dedicated people, committed to reporting and reducing the environmental footprint of the Victorian Public Service.

Read the report to explore opportunities for entities to reduce their environmental footprint, continue learning from the shift to remote working and support adoption of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
