Yorta Yorta Climate Change Group
In early 2009, the Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation formed a Climate Change Group to contribute to policy discussions on climate change and environmental sustainability. These discussions include climate change adaptation and opportunities for the Yorta Yorta Nation to build capacity in dealing with the impacts of climate change.
Professor Auty has been involved with the Yorta Yorta Climate Change Group since its inception, first in her role as the Chair of the Victorian Ministerial Reference Council on Climate Change and now as the Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability, Victoria. In addition, Professors David Griggs and Amanda Lynch from the Monash Sustainability Institute at Monash University, Professor John Langford of the Murray Darling Commission and Monash and Melbourne universities have also worked with the Yorta Yorta Climate Change Group.
In April 2010, Professor Lynch and representatives of the Yorta Yorta Nations attended the 9th session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and held talks with other agencies in New York and Washington. The matters discussed included climate change, biodiversity and Indigenous participation and inclusion in reporting processes, resource management and cultural concerns. The extensive consultation program will be the basis of a report to the Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability, and inform the next State of the Environment Report.
Professor Auty intends to continue her involvement with the Yorta Yorta Climate Change Group as it undertakes its research, development and community engagement program.
