Stratospheric Ozone Depletion

The ozone layer absorbs harmful ultraviolet radiation. The hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica is a significant concern for Victorians as too much exposure to ultraviolet radiation can lead to skin cancer. The ozone hole reached a maximum area around the year 2000 and it has since stabilised with further improvements predicted. This partial recovery has been due to the worldwide ban on ozone-depleting substances — an example of how worldwide action can succeed in improving the global environment. However, its continued recovery may be threatened by climate change.

This section reports on trends in stratospheric ozone concentrations, the source of ozone-depleting substances, and the implications of the hole in the ozone layer for human health, marine ecosystems, terrestrial vegetation and agriculture. The success of the international and local responses to this issue is described. Some recommendations are provided for further improvements.
